Mapping Nine Years of RVing

I love maps. I like looking at where we’re going, where we’ve been, and where I dream about going.

I wanted to see what a map would look like that showed everywhere we have camped during our first nine years of RVing so I created this one using Google Maps.

To zoom in on the map, click the plus sign at the bottom left of the map. To zoom out, click the minus sign. To see information about a map point, click on the red map point.

  1. When we went mobile, I thought our travels-map would be more organized. Several routes and campsites have called us back to revisitations. Other places I expected to have visited by now wait on the some-day pile like orphans. We have enjoyed every place we have been — even cold and soggy Florida — though for different reasons than we expected.
    It’s fun looking back from time to time. But I’m still more interested in looking forward to what lies ahead. 🙂

  2. Perhaps you should’ve put where you haven’t been LOL. I too love maps and always study the map before venturing out and about in a new place. And then it’s, where should we go next? Nice job on the map.

    1. Judy, we only spent one or two nights in a lot of those places as we traveled between destinations. And the longest time we ever spent in the same place was about two weeks. Since we aren’t full timers we have a limited amount of time for each trip and try to see as much as we can along the way.

        1. I agree. Just last year when we were in Texas they were experiencing a five year drought. Shortly after we returned home some of the areas we had visited had devastating floods. It made it so much more real to know what the areas looked like before the flooding.

  4. That’s crazy cool….and not an easy task with Google!!! Is that wild to see when all you’ve been! Not many can say they did that….onward or Talley ho:)!!!!!!

  5. What a wonderful way to spend 9 years! My sister and husband ride Harleys a lot and she has a huge map on the wall with strings to the places they’ve been connected to photos of those places. I’m pretty jealous of her, too!

  6. I don’t know Beth, looks like you need to get cracking on a trip to eastern Washington/Oregon and west Idaho. That big old hole is a glaring omission on your otherwise almost total coverage.

  7. We are new to Georgia and have yet to see a football game, but it is on our list of TTD! Your map of places you’ve traveled is remarkable!

  8. Unbelievable! You get around!! Ha ha ha! What a fabulous job you did here. Not very easy to do.
    I enjoy maps… I would read the road map when I traveled with my parents in an RV when I was in high school. My Mom could not read a map… So I had the designated job!

    1. I’m the navigator on our trips. We have a GPS we don’t always trust so I am always looking at the Rand McNally atlas. I also pick up state maps at welcome centers. Making this map took a while but once I got the hang of it it went pretty smoothly.

  9. Wow, you guys have seriously been traveling over the past ten years in your RV! Great job on the map. I don’t know if you have any plans to add far West Texas to your list at some point, but it is, of course, one of our favorite places to visit in the RV, and I only wish we could put together several weeks at one time to see and do more out there, especially in and around Big Bend NP and Big Bend Ranch SP. Oh well, maybe when we retire! Where are you headed next?

    1. Thank you. Yes, it’s a lot of places spread out over a lot of time. There is so much beauty all over the United States and we have only seen a small part of it. There is enough in the west alone to keep you busy for a lifetime!

  11. Awesome depiction of your travels on a map, Beth! We wanna be like you! We’re gonna just make 100-200 mile hops and stay in each place for 3-4 weeks each, so we won’t be pinning a lot of locations real fast, but more as time goes on. Way to go, Dawgs!

    1. Thank you! Since we are not full timers we try to see as many places as we can on each trip. The longest we have stayed in one place is week. Many of the places on the map are one or two night stops between destinations. We rarely travel more than 300 miles a day. There is so much to see all over our beautiful country.

  12. This is great. I’ve not had much good luck using the maps. But you’ve inspired me to try again. But I did want to actually track the miles and now want to do it yearly. Since we’re covering the same territory in SE Florida!

  13. I LOVE your map! Great job and most appreciated by someone like me who is in the planning stages 🙂 . I see you have been to St. Joseph’s State Park in northern FL on the Gulf. From everything I have read, it looks and sounds like an amazing place to camp – peaceful and quiet. Do you remember much about it? If so, maybe you would be so kind as to give me your opinion.

    We are going to leave the freezing cold northeast for warmer climes in December. My arthritis just can’t handle the cold anymore, but I do love it here in the other seasons. Thank you so much for your help!

    1. Thank you! Yes, we have been to St. Joseph Peninsula State Park twice. Both times were in January and we camped in the Sandy Pines campground and loved it. The white sand beaches are almost empty in the winter. From there we made a day trip to Appalachicola and St. George Island. The state park is remote but there is a laundry and grocery store in Port St. Joe. No dogs on the beach in the park but outside the park there are some public parking areas to beaches where dogs are allowed. We saw deer in the campground and lots of birds in the bay. I would recommend it.

      1. Thank you so much for your reply! From your description, St. Joseph SP will be exactly what we’re looking for – remote, birds, empty white sand beaches – what more could anyone want :). We live in the middle of nowhere and don’t like crowds, so this will be perfect in every aspect. Our pups will be happy just to stick close and walk a little on the trails. They’re both elderly rescues and their days of long walks are in the past. Again, my sincerest thanks for your reply. You confirmed what I felt St. Joseph would be, but it’s so nice to hear from someone who has been there. Take care and safe travels.
