Wandering Around America One State at a Time – Kansas

Welcome to the next post in my series highlighting states we have visited throughout the years. I hope you will enjoy coming along for the ride!

I will be featuring the states alphabetically. The next state is

Kansas

Kansas became the 34th state on January 29, 1861 and the capital is Topeka.

We’ve wandered through Kansas on our travels and camped there twice. Both times we camped there it was only for one night. Both times we arrived late after a long driving day and left early the next morning for another day of hard driving. Both stays were pleasant and a cornfield bordered the campground. Both times as we drove through Kansas we passed by pastures filled with grazing cattle and many farms with fields of corn, wheat, and other grains. Wild sunflowers beside the highway added a splash of yellow to the landscape.

The last time we drove through Kansas was in the summer of 2013. We fought a head wind all day as we drove east on  I-70 and stopped for the night in an RV park near the interstate. I took a few photos of the fields surrounding the park but unfortunately, I lost my Kansas photos after my computer’s hard drive crashed last year.

  2. I do enjoy your journeys and I have a lot to catch up on! I’ve heard Kansas is beautiful and I was there once for work and never left the hotel. Wish I could have seen all those beautiful fields.

  4. We’ve never been to Kansas… yet, lol. Don’t you just hate when the hard drive crashes. Just recently happened on my external drive losing 3 months of wonderful shots. Oh well, lesson learned, back up, back up, lol. You’ll just have to get back there to retake those lost photos. Maybe we’ll beat you there, lol.

  5. Now you’re talking a subject I know about because I lived there for over 30 years and will probably be back there this June to spend time with my husband’s family. As mentioned the Eisenhower Memorial is very nice. But, when I think Kansas I think the summer light fading and the combines marching down a field of wheat. It is an amazing sight. And, there is never a summer in NH when I don’t plant sunflowers and enjoy their beautiful faces. 🙂 Although I do admit most people view Kansas as a highway from Missouri to Colorado. 🙂

    1. I enjoy traveling through the heartland and seeing all the farms and ranches. I was hoping we could spend a little more time in Kansas. Both times we stayed there it was on the tail end of a very long trip and by the time we got to Kansas we were ready to get home.

  6. It occurs to me that in all the RV blogs I’ve read the last several years, no one has ever talked about Kansas. I imagine all those fields of wheat and flowers are beautiful. I’m not sure when we’ll get there, but we’ll get there!!

    1. If you ever travel cross country on I-70 you will end up in Kansas eventually. It’s a big state and it can be enjoyable if you enjoy seeing seeing crops growing in the fields.
