Bird weekly Challenge #9: Birds of Prey

Of all the birds of prey I’ve seen in the wild, the Bald Eagle is by far my favorite. These magnificent birds mate for life and return to the same nest year after year. Alaska is a Bald Eagle lovers paradise.

There are Bald Eagles on some of the Georgia barrier islands near our home but it isn’t every day that one decides to perch on top of our neighbor’s dock house. I was able to get a photo of this Bald Eagle on a foggy December afternoon.

Sometimes I can hear the owls in the trees in our neighborhood but they are hard to see. One morning this juvenile horned owl perched on our dock for a while.

Hawks are birds of prey I’ve often seen in Georgia and Florida.

An occasional hawk will fly over our back yard in search of a tasty morsel. One day one stopped for a break on a fence post.

I often see ospreys soaring overhead as they search for food. I have managed to capture some on their nests.

  2. I so enjoyed your shots and comments. We were at St Simons Island just last week, for butterflies (Of course!, LOL) and didn’t give a thought to trying harder to see raptors and owls. Your post here re-kindled that. Thanks.

    1. Judy, the Bald Eagles in Alaska were amazing. The one at the state park in Haines was up in a tree close to where we were standing and didn’t budge while I took photos. I watched that owl for a long time before he finally took off over the marsh.

  5. Awesome gallery of birds of prey. Alaska is a place I’ve never been and so want to go. I’m a Deadliest Catch fan & they show birds that I could only dream about seeing but to see the eagles everywhere would just be a jaw dropper for me. The hawk between the red-shoulder & osprey looks like a juvenile Sharp-shinned hawk. Pretty great capture! I don’t have a good photo of one. 😊

          1. They typically winter here and up the coast, but I’ve seen them here in Florida at all times of the year. Oh, and by the way, thank you so much for your kind review on the Etsy store. Remember, don’t put that in the dishwasher. You can wash it with soap and water though. 🙂 I’m sorting out what charity I’m going to do next month and I’m putting that ribbon on all the different sized tumblers. Then breast cancer for October. It would be great to give back so research can come up with a cure. 🙂
