Lens-Artists Photo Challenge #159 – Postcards

Our final guest host for the month of July is Ana Campo of Anvica’s Gallery. Her challenge is Postcards. She writes about thinking about how many postcards were used in the past “to congratulate, as a souvenir of the places we visited or simply as collectibles.” The above image is a real post card I brought back from our trip to Hawaii.

Once upon a time, when long distance phone calls were too expensive, before Facebook, Instagram, WordPress blogs, and many other internet options were available, travelers would mail postcards to their friends and family back home.

I love receiving postcards so when we were planning our first RV trip across the U.S. and Canada I knew I wanted to send postcards to our grand children. I have kept up that tradition for all our trips, whether we were gone for a few months or just a few days. I enjoy picking out the cards, writing to them about our adventures on the back of the card, and even searching for a mailbox to mail them.

The cards usually were 25 cents each and sometimes I could get 5 for a dollar. I still have a collection of extra cards that never got mailed.

Sometimes as I edited photos from a trip I would find one almost identical to a postcard I had purchased! For this challenge I chose to show three postcards and my similar photos. The cards are in the left column with my photos in the right.

I hope my grandkids had as much fun receiving the postcards as I had picking them out, writing them, and searching for a mailbox to mail them.

  3. I love how you put your pictures side by side with the postcards! Postcards seem to be a lost art, but are so endearing to send, receive and keep! Great post!

    1. Betty, I’m glad you enjoyed the post. I agree. I think postcards are a lost art. These days when I see a rack of post cards there don’t seem to be as many to choose from as there used to be.

  4. Great postcards to share with us, and I, too, have many unsent postcards!!! But I still buy them, especially for my granddaughter so she can see where we’ve traveled and, hopefully, learn a bit more about each place. Thanks for hosting this month. It was fun, wasn’t it?

  5. “I have kept up that tradition for all our trips” – How wonderful! Mary – especially she – and I keep that tradition alive, too. She usually uses picture postcards she buys, I prefer to print my own from photos I take. But whichever way: it’s absolute fun. 🙂

    How creative putting the postcard next to your image.
    And I have to agree with you about trying to find the post office or a mailbox to send them. We drove all around a little town in Texas trying to do the same.

    Now… I am going to give you a little tip. I shared this with Judy of New England Garden and Thread. There is an app that you can download to your phone. It’s called Touch Note. It will take any one of your pictures from your phone gallery and turn them into a postcard. It will even give the date of when the picture was taken and you can have a special stamp that they will put on it. Anyhoo… I use this app often and you can purchase a few at a time. They don’t cost .25 cents but the price is not too bad. I use them as Thank You’s , Thinking of You cards or as actual Post Cards from our trips. It’s quite a wonderful app.

  11. I love the postcard idea. I used to collect postcards from our travels… many years ago. Thanks for a reminder that I should pick up a few and maybe even try and replicate. Fun post!
