Windswept oak trees in Rockport, TexasWindswept oak in Goose Island State Park, TexasThe oak trees around Rockport, Texas are bent from the constant wind from the Gulf
We spent many, many years in Kansas where the wind blows all the time. If you haven’t lived where it blows constantly, you might not understand the damage it can cause. Amazing photos of those trees.
I was taught years ago that it is actually the salt spray carried by the wind that causes the trees to take those shapes. Not sure if that is still accepted science, but I thought it was pretty interesting. In any case, they are beautiful.
I think it’s a combination of both, actually. Here’s a quick link that mentions the salt component: http://hort.ifas.ufl.edu/woody/salt.shtml. I believe the salt spray contributes to the distinctive one-sided shapes of the trees in the first photo.
I’m familiar with those trees and am always fascinated by them…. unique!

I had not heard the salt spray idea before. Everything I read said they were bent as a result of the Gulf breezes.
