Located in the northeast Georgia near Blairsville, Brasstown Bald is the highest point in Georgia at 4,784 feet.
Just getting there is quite an adventure. We drove west from Dillard on beautiful Georgia mountain roads. The last few miles we drove on narrow Georgia Spur 180 with sharp turns, switchbacks, and steep grades before arriving at the parking lot for Brasstown Bald.
The parking lot is located .6 miles below the top of Brasstown Bald. We could either hike up a steep trail or take a shuttle. We chose the shuttle.

After the shuttle dropped us off at the top we walked up a few steps to the observation deck where the views were spectacular in all directions. On a clear day visitors can see 4 states. It was cloudy that day but we were able to see three states – Georgia, Tennessee and North Carolina. We also toured the museum and watched a short film about the mountain.

Hi Beth, we are headed to Asheville at the end of the month and will return to FL with stops to visit Blue Ridge and Dahlonega. We have Brasstown Bald on our list, but I do not think I can take that drive up to get to the tower. Did you drive that in your RV? I cannot even imagine. How scary is the drive up, I’d love to see that beautiful view.

Suzanne, the road is not scary at all. We’ve been on much steeper! It is wide enough for two cars. There is a sign at the bottom telling you not to take a trailer. No, we did not take the RV. Don’t be afraid to go – it is a beautiful drive and the views are worth the trip! Once at the top you can walk up stairs to the observation deck or take an elevator.

It’s too bad the tower is closed to the public. Is that an old fort or was it built to show off the location?

It’s not a fort. It was built in 1965. It is on Forest Service land and managed by them. The tower was used as a fire tower. Not sure if they still use it for that. The observation deck is large and the views from there are spectacular.

Beth, we walked up there a number of years ago. I don’t think that they had a shuttle back then. I couldn’t do that now because of my deteriorating back and knees!
