Lens Artists Photo Challenge #338 – Pick a Word

For this challenge JohnBo of Journeys with JohnBo has asked us to pick a word and feature three or four images that represent that word. I have chosen the word river for this challenge, specifically the Mississippi River.

We recently returned from a river cruise on the lower Mississippi River from New Orleans to Memphis. All of these images were taken during our journey the last week of February. I was standing on our veranda in our stateroom when I captured the header image of vessels passing under the twin bridges over the Mississippi River at the Port of New Orleans.

  1. The mighty Mississippi. Great word choice and photos to match, Beth!

Many years ago, we visited the headwaters at Lake Itasca, Minnesota. We traveled short sections of the Mississippi River over the years on day cruises, but finally last year, we sailed down the Mississippi from the docks at New Orleans and into the Gulf of Mexico.

    1. John, wow! Sailing down from New Orleans to the Gulf must have been an amazing experience. We have visited several places along the Mississippi River and even camped in our RV next to it a few times. We visited the headwaters at Lake Itasca twice and walked across the headwaters both times. We had a great time being on the Mississippi on this cruise. I’ll be posting more about it later.

  2. I don’t live in the US but I grew up hearing tales about this river, it seems so massive and grand, but scary too. You picked a great word Beth and a great river to highlight. A boat cruise on it must have been wonderful. My favourite is the tugboat on the foggy morning, almost looks like a painting.

    1. Egidio, when I read JohnBo’s challenge I immediately knew I had to choose the Mississippi River as my subject. The hard part was choosing which photos to include. I’m glad you like them.

    I could skate away on
I wish I had a river so long
I would teach my feet to fly”

  4. How fun that you were able to enjoy so much of this great river.
I am in awe anytime I cross the river and you really captured different moods and different sections – and ending with the orange glow sunset was a tasty ending

  5. Again, How did I miss this Beth! During our cross country trip, I remember sitting in the campground watching the push boats push barges down/up this mighty river. We also took a boat tour to honor my Mom. She always wanted to take a cruise on the Mississippi.

    1. Anne, how fun that you enjoyed watching the boats pushing the barges on the Mississippi River. When we used to take RV trips we camped at a couple of campgrounds where we loved sitting and watching the barges. We saw quite a few during this cruise. Some were huge!

  6. You picked a great word, Beth – together with beautiful images. This river is alive in our minds even if we don’t live in America. Books, songs, paintings…mighty.
