Lens Artists Photo Challenge #353 – Stormy

I am very excited and honored to present my first challenge as a member of the Lens-Artists team. This week I’m challenging you to show us your stormy images. Think about stormy weather, stormy feelings, or maybe stormy situations.

It’s June and Hurricane Season has just begun. Where I live in coastal Georgia thunderstorms are a normal occurrence all summer long and we keep a close watch on updates from the National Hurricane Center. The featured image is what we saw through our windshield as we were headed into a thunderstorm on our way home from a recent trip. We were grateful to arrive home safely.

The following images show different kinds of stormy conditions we see during the summer months in coastal Georgia.

Water Spout over the Atlantic ocean

Before a hurricane the red flags indicate high hazard conditions and the beach is closed to the public.

Angry Seas from a Tropical Storm

We have often encountered stormy weather during our travels.

Stormy day in Jamaica

Driving through snow on the road to Hurricane Ridge in Olympic National Park

Our bear watching excursion in Ketchikan, Alaska started out in the pouring rain but that didn’t stop us from braving the weather. We didn’t mind getting wet – we saw 8 black bears.

A violent thunderstorm cut our day short with grand kids at a Florida water park one June.
Sometimes we are rewarded with a rainbow after a storm

We ran into some scary storms when we traveled around the U. S. and Canada towing our fifth wheel trailer. I’ll never forget traveling through snow and sleet with icy road conditions as we drove through Minnesota in early April one year. We ended up getting off the Interstate and spending the night in a motel. The next day when the roads were clear enough to travel we continued our westward trek. We found an open state park in South Dakota and were the only campers in the park.

What does stormy look like to you? For stormy weather, think about rain, blizzards, sleet, snow, hail, wind, dark clouds, angry seas, lightening, a storm rolling in, or people out in the weather. Some other options would be to show stormy feelings or stormy situations. Be sure to tag your post with Lens-Artists and include a link back to this post. I’m looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

Last week I really enjoyed your creative and calming responses to Sofia’s Mellow challenge. Be sure to look for Anne’s challenge next Saturday, June 21 at noon Eastern Time.

  1. Hi Beth, I’m so excited to see your first post for Lens-Artists! Stormy is a great theme! Wow, your images of various storms are incredible. I’d be frightened of hurricanes and water-related disasters. I’ll take earthquakes and wildfires over hurricanes any day 😆 I’ll see what I can dig up for Wednesday. Again, welcome!

    1. Terri, thank you so much. I’m so glad you like the theme! Hurricanes and thunderstorms are just a part of life here. At least with hurricanes we have some advance notice and can make a decision of whether to leave or stay.

    1. Pam, you can relate to all of these summer storms! The water spout was a few years ago. I’m glad I had my camera handy because it only lasted a few minutes. I’ve never been able to capture lightening, though. Wishing you a safe and uneventful hurricane season this year.

      1. Yes we all wish for a quiet hurricane season! I saw a waterspout once offshore, but no camera (pre-cell phone). I totally know all of those storms. Let’s hope for sunny skies and rainbows!

  2. Wow, Beth! There are some fabulous images here. I really can’t contribute because I’ve rarely been caught out in such stormy weather, but I will look on in wonder xx

  3. Welcome Beth! Right away, you’re getting us all stormed up! What a great first challenge. I loved all your stormy images, especially the water spout over the Atlantic ocean. I’ve been in many storms, so I’ll see what I can come up with.

  4. What a great challenge.

Those clouds over the Blue Ridge Mountains would be enough to keep me indoors. I think world over, we’ve all had our share in recent years. The only issue sometimes is whether we have a camera in hand at the time to record it.

    Love the snow.

(At the rate our winter is heading in Melbourne, Australia, I wouldn’t be surprised if we got snow in the city. The northern suburbs got it about a week or so ago).

    1. Vicki, thank you so much! We were taking a drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway when we saw the storm over the mountains. We had no choice but to keep on going. I’m glad I had my camera ready.

  5. You set a hard challenge for me Beth. We don’t really get storms here in Melbourne. I think you have captured some great ones and the USA really gets a lot of storms. Great images and challenge.

    1. Leanne, many thanks. You are lucky to not have many storms where you are. The summer storms are a part of life where I am. I’m glad we don’t get many winter storms.

  6. From angry seas to bear-spotting in a downpour—now that’s the stormy spirit! 🌩️
Loved the wild ride through weather and wonder. Mother Nature clearly keeps us humble, soggy, and blessed with rainbows. Bravo on your first challenge—it’s thunderously good! 👍👍👍

    1. Thank you so much! I am happy to be a part of the LAPC team and already having fun doing it. The rain had let up by the time I took the photo from our bear watching excursion. We had on our rain gear but some of our group were soaked. Yes, it was worth it to see those bears! I really enjoyed your response to the challenge.

    1. Judy, the best place to be when we get one of the summer thunderstorms is in my house looking out the window. There was one all yesterday afternoon. It was scary driving on the icy interstate in Minnesota but it sure made the trip more memorable!

    1. Suzanne, many thanks! I know you have seen your share of storms. We had a big thunderstorm all yesterday afternoon. I was glad I could watch it from inside my house.

    1. Joanne, many thanks! I’m so glad you like my first challenge. We saw the storm over the Blue Ridge mountains as we were taking a scenic drive. The rainbow was just a couple of weeks ago.

    1. Nora, we had on our rain gear and were ready for the weather. I just had to protect my camera from getting wet. The rain let up so we could enjoy seeing the bears. We only got to spend a couple of hours at the water park. Our grandkids didn’t get to do too much but didn’t complain when we had to leave.

    1. Teresa, Thank you for the warm welcome. I’m glad you like the challenge. The storm in the first photo was scary to drive through. The good news was in was Sunday afternoon and there wasn’t a lot of traffic on the interstate. Thank you so much for your wonderful post.

      1. No problem, there must be a WP glitch. I also couldn’t post my link in your blog, when I tried via the jetpack app from my mobile. Then I took help of my laptop and pasted my ‘”stormy post” url, in your comment box. And that worked.
        Thank you. Beth.

  7. Welcome to your first stormy entry with us, Beth! Great idea and pictures! Love especially the angry sea and the rainbow, but Ketchican stole my heart. We visited last year, but the bear watch was cancelled because of bad weather…

I will try to find something for the challenge, but it will not be easy. We don’t often have storms and if we have – I don’t go out to photograph. Let’s see what I can find…

    1. Ann-Christine, thank you for much for the warm welcome! I’m glad you like my first challenge. I’m sorry you missed the bear watching excursion in Ketchican because of the weather. It poured on us in the beginning but once we got to the boardwalk over the creek it wasn’t too bad. I was more worried about my camera getting soaked that anything else. Luckily it stayed pretty dry under my rain jacket.
