Lens Artists Photo Challenge #346 – Cinematic

Sofia has challenged us to feature cinematic photos. She tells us “There are a few things that give a photo that cinematic feel: camera angles, bold and high-contrast colors, light, locations, just to name a few. The main objective is to take a shot that is part of a story, there’s mood and a sense of location; our image is but a snapshot of a much wider situation.”

I love movies and I’m a big fan of old black and white films. My first two images are my attempts at getting a cinematic feel in the photos. The header image could be the opening scene in a horror movie. Will there be zombies, vampires, ghosts, or werewolves to terrorize the world? Will a corpse rise up from one of the graves? Perhaps we’ll see Bela Lugosi or Frankenstein in the next scene.

This reminds me of a scene from an old spy thriller. Is this person going to a secret meeting? What is waiting outside in the light?

I decided to have a little bit of fun with the rest of my images. These final images were taken at actual filming locations. Can you guess what movies they are from?

Many westerns were filmed in this western location in the United States. I can imagine riders on horseback, a stagecoach or a wagon train speeding along the road. Can you name a movie or a famous actor from one of the westerns that were filmed here?

In what movie does a feather float down around this church tower in the opening sequence. Hint: A famous line from the movie is “Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get.”

The famous movie scene featuring the line “I’ll have what she’s having” is from what movie that was filmed in this New York City Deli?

Many thanks to Sofia for this challenge Lens-Artists #346 – Cinematic

  1. Great shots! You did great for this challenge! A famous actor that was in Monument Valley was John Wayne.
Forest Gump was a great movie. And of course When Harry Met Sally.

  2. Your quiz is such a fun idea Beth! There must surely have been a John Wayne appearance in your first question and of course Forest Gump in the second. The third is not only from the move but is a current TV commercial for Hellman’s from When Harry Met Sally

  3. There is a nice museum near Monument Valley that has the John Wayne movie posters. And everyone remembers that one scene from When Harry Met Sally – a classic! Without the hint I would have missed the Forrest Gump church. Fun stuff!

    1. Pam, when we went to Monument Valley we camped at Gouldings, a campground with a view of Monument Valley. There was a stage coach from the movies and a cabin that was John Wayne’s cabin in one of the movies. There was a souvenir store and a restaurant that probably had pictures and posters but I don’t remember them. Do you remember the scene in Forrest Gump at Monument Valley?

      1. In the back of Gouldings was the museum – it was really neat with lots of that kind of stuff. Was the Forrest Gump scene one of him running on the “endless” road? Last time we stayed at the newer hotel called “The View”. It is outstanding!

  4. Excellent post, Beth. I have to say I didn’t know the first one but could have guessed at a John Wayne film. The other two were easier. I love the feel on your first two, especially the second one!

    1. Sofia, I’m so glad you enjoyed the post. I love movies and I had fun with this challenge although I couldn’t decide at first how to approach it. I’m glad you liked the first two images. You would have been correct with John Wayne!

  5. My memory for movie scenes is a bit fuzzy, Beth. Grin. But when I come across them in my travels, I always read the write ups. Like Star Wars and Death Valley. As I recall, Monument Valley was a favorite go-to location for Westerns with several being made there including more than one featuring John Wayne. Another for Westerns was the Alabama Hills near Mt. Whitney. They have a museum there. The early films didn’t have a lot of bucks to produce movies and having near-by sites was a great benefit. This was especially our of the Whitney site which could be reached in a day’s drive from Hollywood.
Peggy and I may be in Monument Valley gains this summer as we wander around in the Southwest. Fun post!
