August 7 is National Lighthouse Day in the United States. On this day in 1789 Congress passed a law to provide federal funding for all lighthouses.
I love lighthouses so to celebrate this event I am featuring the four historic lighthouses that are accessible to the public in the state of Georgia. The Tybee Island Lighthouse underwent major restoration in 2024. The featured image shows the lighthouse flying the American Flag during the restoration.
The following gallery shows the Tybee Island Lighthouse after the restoration was complete. On the right is the Cockspur Island Lighthouse. Although the Cockspur Light is not open to the public it can be seen from the Lazaretto Creek Bridge on U. S. Highway 80 on the way to Tybee Island, from a boat, or from the Lighthouse Trail at Ft. Pulaski National Monument.

In the next gallery the St. Simons Island Lighthouse is on the left, the Sapelo Island Lighthouse on the right.

Every Day is a Gift

These are great! I love lighthouses too! Thanks! Tybee with the flag is amazing!

Thanks Pam! I can’t resist taking photos of the Tybee Lighthouse especially when it is flying the flag for a patriotic occasion.

Great lighthouse images Beth. I like them too.

Thanks Anne. I always think about the dedication of those early lighthouse keepers who had to carry the fuel up the stairs to keep the light burning.

Thanks Egidio. The Tybee Lighthouse is the tallest with 178 stairs. The view from the top is worth the climb!

The photo of the Cockspur Light (lovely name) looks wonderful. Often, photos of more dilapidated structures look much better than those of the spruced up ones.

Many thanks! The Cockspur Lighthouse sits on a small piece of land. At high tide the land is covered by water.

I love lighthouses. I’m very familiar with the Saint Simons lighthouse but haven’t seen the others. I feel a day trip to the coast coming. 😉📷

Donna, you can see the Tybee Light and Cockspur Light with a trip to Tybee Island and Savannah. Tybee is the tallest lighthouse in the state. The Sapelo Lighthouse requires a ferry ride to the island. We saw it when we took a guided tour.

Judy, I love covered bridges, too! There are a few scattered around Georgia but I’ve only seen one of them. Glad you enjoyed the lighthouse photos.

Lighthouses intrigue me and whenever I see one I imagine the years, weather, visitors, etc they’ve witnessed.

Thanks for your comments. They intrigue me, too. That’s why I’ve often gone out of my way to see them. I imagine how hard it was in the old days when the keeper had to carry the cans of fuel up the steps to keep the light on.
