We’ve driven through Darien many times over the years and have previously stopped there for a seafood dinner on the Darien River. We had never taken the time to explore the area so for our anniversary this year we decided to spend the night in a hotel on the Darien river.
After taking the scenic drive south on Highway 17 we checked into our room before having a delicious flounder sandwich for lunch at a popular local restaurant.
The first place we explored was the Fort King Georgie State Historic Site close to our hotel. The fort was was built by the British in 1721 at the mouth of the Altamaha River to protect the area from the Spanish and the French. Fire destroyed the fort in 1727 and the fort was decommissioned.
Reconstruction of the fort began in the 1970’s and still continues today. We toured the interesting history museum before wandering around the reconstructed fort.

The rest of the afternoon we enjoyed the pool and for a while relaxed on our balcony overlooking the river. After a delicious seafood dinner and a walk along the dock we ended the evening back on the balcony enjoying the view.

The next morning I strolled along the Darien Waterfront Park before breakfast.

On our way home we made a slight detour to visit a recently opened Buc-ees on I-95 in Brunswick. Imagine a huge gas station and a huge store with souvenirs, hot food including Texas brisket, a wall of jerky, groceries, clothes, and even fresh made fudge. It was our first ever visit to a Buc-ees. Now we can say we’ve been there, done that.

You had lovely weather for your visit.

Happy Anniversary to you guys. Darien is a cool little town with lots of history. We love taking a detour when driving north. Best fried shrimp ever! Glad you checked out Buc-ees. We found it fascinating.

Thanks Suzanne! We really enjoyed our time in Darien. Did you have the fried shrimp at Skipper’s? That’s where we went for dinner. Buc-ees was fun but a little overwhelming. The brisket and the fudge were both delicious. It reminded me of the big stores at Disney World! Fascinating is a good way to describe it.

Yes, Skipper’s. I had forgotten the name of the restaurant until you said it. Buc-ees hasn’t made its way to So. Florida, but I fear it is on its way. Just what we need… although, I could go for another brisket sandwich!

Happy Anniversary. I recognize a couple of places in your photos. We stopped there on our way to Florida and ate at Skippers Fish Camp – good food!!

What a nice way to celebrate your anniversary Beth. But you didn’t say whether you bought anything at Buck-ees!

Anne, we bought two brisket sandwiches, two kind of fudge, and some beef jerky. The brisket and fudge were delicious. I didn’t try the jerky. Do you have them there?

No we don’t have Buck-ees. There’s a local restaurant that has the best smoked BBQ brisket and of course, See’s candy. I don’t like jerky, but I bought some turkey jerky. I haven’t tried it yet.

I don’t eat the jerky. My husband picked it out.

I guess I should bite into the turkey jerky to see if I like it!

Egidio, I loved the views of the river and the marsh. Darien isn’t a tourist destination so it was refreshing not to have to deal with big crowds until we got to Buc-ees. I’m sure you are familiar with Buc-ees.

Donna, thanks for the happy anniversary wishes. Darien was perfect for us for a quick getaway close to home. That Buc-ees just opened in June so we had to go check it out.

Looks like a great way to spend an anniversary, Beth. Congratulations. I was curious about someone naming their boat Grave Digger, however! 😳

Curt, I’m sure there is an interesting story to go with that boat name!

And, a perfect anniversary celebration it was! Love all the photos but especially the three ships so close together. As for Buc-ees, I’ve never been, but my grandson has, and he couldn’t talk fast enough to tell us all about it.

Judy, we were overwhelmed by the Buc-ees! It just opened in June and it was really crowded. Maybe the crowds will die down after it’s been open for a while. The brisket and made in house fudge were delicious. We only went in half of the store!

I have been to Buccee’s, and yes, it is overwhelming!
Thanks for taking us along.

Thanks Nancy! Nothing better than wild Georgia shrimp fresh from the boat. Darien is less than two hours south of us. Sometimes the best places are close to home.
