Lens Artists Photo Challenge #362 – Sports, Sporting Events and Fun Games

Everyone gets scared, and everyone falls. The key is to get back up and try again.

Shannon Miller, American gymnast, winner of 7 Olympic medals

My featured image is from the 1996 Olympic yachting events in Savannah.

According to Dictionary.com, the definition of sport is: an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc.

This week I am challenging you to feature sports activities. Show us your favorite sports, teams, athletes, fans, sporting equipment, stadiums, or anything else related to sports.. You can also include fun games you can play with your friends such as croquet, ping pong or horseshoes.

I have many happy memories of cheering on my children and grandchildren at their sporting events

I hated every minute of training, but I said “Don’t quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion”

Muhammad Ali

Have you ever witnessed or participated in a triathlon? The following gallery shows the start of the swim portion of a triathlon in Florida and two bicyclists in the cycling portion of a triathlon in Virginia. In my mind, every one who participates in a triathlon is a champion.

Kite surfing, surfing, paddle boarding and swimming are just a few of the many types of water sports.

My motto was always to keep swinging. Whether I was in a slump or feeling badly or having trouble off the field, the only thing to do was keep swinging.

Hank Aaron, American baseball player who held the record for most home runs in a season for many years

This baseball gallery includes former Atlanta Braves pitcher Greg Maddux, an Atlanta Braves spring training game, and the St. Louis Cardinals’ Busch Stadium as seen from the top of the St. Louis Arch. Play Ball!

This motor sports gallery includes the start of the Daytona 500 NASCAR race and a power boat race.

Do you enjoy fun outdoor games like Croquet?

American football season is almost here. Soon high school stadiums will be filled with fans as the teams compete on Friday nights, on Saturdays college campuses will be filled with fans in town to attend the game, and on Sundays games in the professional NFL will be played all across America.

My husband and I have always been huge fans of University of Georgia Bulldogs. We had season tickets for many years and on many Saturdays we would cheer on the Dawgs from our seats in Sanford Stadium. This gallery shows the excitement of game day with fans tailgating before a big game, the team running through the band as they enter the field, the stadium filled with fans for a night game, and action on the playing field.

Today there are hundreds of different sports played around the world. Your challenge is to show images from any sports or games you choose. They can be action shots, crowds of fans dressed in their team colors, stadiums and other venues, your favorite team or athlete, sports you participate in, or anything else sports related.

I’m looking forward to seeing all of your sports images. Use your imagination and have fun! Be sure to tag your post with Lens-Artists and include a link back to this post. I’m looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

You showed us some amazing doors last week for Sofia’s challenge Doors. We hope you will join us for Anne’s challenge on August 30 at noon Eastern Time.

  1. Great spectator sports images and challenge Beth. Although I’m not into pro sports, or much sports, I’ll rummage through my archives. I’m sure I can find some images that would fit this wonderful theme. I believe that finding photos that suit challenges is part of the challenge!

  2. This theme is speaking my language, Beth! You’ve captured amazing shots of sports events! Amazing variety too! I love the water sports. And the Olympic quote! Although my Sunday Stills theme is “trees” this week, I can make this work!

    1. Egidio, thank you so much! I really enjoy sports photography, too. I have over 25 years of UGA football pictures! Thank you for your amazing response to the challenge.

  3. Great theme, but for a person who does not go to sporting events. Thanks for the inspiration, I used to go to watch football / european one as my husband and all our kids played it. Ice hockey and basketball, track and field, but they are photos of so long ago that I decided not to post those. But it did bring back memories of the joy of those events.. And every day is a gift is true….

  4. You had my attention with the first picture, Beth! I used to sail a 420 when I was waaay younger.

Now your wonderful challenge made me revisit some of my favourite pictures – and make a new one just about an hour ago. (It would have been left unmade for quite another while, had it not been for this challenge.)

Though I am not a sports person, I very much like this challenge – to my own surprise!

    Thank you!

    1. Tobias, thank you so much! The sailboats are from the 1996 Olympic Yachting events which took place in the waters off of Savannah, Georgia. I’m so glad you chose to participate in the challenge. Your images are great.

  5. Lots of excellent action shots here Beth! I’m not sure if I’ll be able to join in this week as I’m away for a few days and also am committed to a specific post tomorrow, but I’ll see what I can do later in the week perhaps.

  6. This is a great post, Beth! Your challenge suggests so many kinds of sport and play. Sport is truly one of the things that makes us human. I especially liked your opening feature image. Alas, this was problematic for me because I just don’t have images of sport and play. But yachting is a sport, and Newport is both a favorite place and the world’s sailing capital. So I posted some images from a visit I made to the IYRS School of Technology and Trades, which teaches yacht design and building. Here’s my post: https://joannemasonphotography.com/lens-artists-challenge-362-sports-and-sporting-events/. Thanks.

    1. Karen, yes, we do enjoy sports. Now, instead of going to the football games we enjoy staying at home to watch them on TV. Now my favorite games to watch in person are our granddaughter’s basketball and volleyball games.

    1. Thanks Nancy! I’ve never played on any teams but I enjoy watching the games. I’ve went to Georgia games for almost 30 years. I’ve spent a lot of time watching my kids and grandkids playing sports. I just stumbled upon some of the other sports I included.

  7. This is a tough one for me as I don’t play any sports, nor watch any live events. No photos of children or grandchildren either. But I will try and dig out a few watery images from my digital shoebox.

    1. Ann-Christine, thank you so much. I’ve been around sports most of my adult life. I haven’t competed in any sports (swimming) since I was in high school. I enjoy photographing the events I attend. I really enjoyed the sports images you featured in your response.
