Lens Artists Photo Challenge #403 – Perspective, Scale, Depth

For this challenge John is asking us to look at tools that shape visual space: perspective, depth, and scale.

Perspective

The view of Mount Rushmore from in front of the monument.

This closeup of Georgie Washington shot from below shows a different perspective of the monument.

Scale

Scale: The tiny humans underneath Delicate Arch illustrate the size of the arch

Scale: The two people standing on the overlook in the bottom right of the image illustrate the massive size of the Grand Canyon

Depth

Depth: Arches at Ft. Pickens

Last week your responses to Sofia’s challenge showed many amazing wonders from around the world. Thank you to everyone who joined the challenge..

  1. Great choices for the theme, Beth. The contrast between the huge landscapes and the tiny human figures gives a powerful sense of scale, and a reminder of how small we are in the world, despite the great impact we have on it.

  2. Your gallery of iconic sites truly shows your use of these basic concepts, Beth! Wonderful examples. My favorite is the view of the Grand Canyon with people showing the canyon’s massive scale. I admit when I took my first images of the Grand Canyon, I had no real size comparisons in my photos to scale the grandeur of the park.

    1. Thanks John! This is a great challenge. I forgot I had that image of the people on the overlook at the Grand Canyon. When I found it as I was looking through my archives I knew I had to use it. I got the inspiration for the Mount Rushmore shots when I was watching a rerun of “North by Northwest” last week.

  3. That example of scale really shows how tiny we, a step back from any self-importance we might be feeling at any time. The arches at Fort Pickens made me google the location. I’d love to visit one day.

  4. Superb shots, Beth!

P.S. Just wanted to let you know why I recently took you out of the notification loop. My email inbox fills up with nearly 1,000 notices every day, so I have to limit it to notifications from those who visit regularly. Good to see you back again, and thank you for being understanding!
