Flashback to the 1996 Summer Olympic Games

I am having a great time sitting in my living room cheering for Team U.S.A. at the Rio Olympics. Twenty years ago I didn’t get to see much of the Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta from my living room. Instead, I was volunteering with the Yachting events (now called Sailing events) near Savannah, Georgia.

Before the games began, we saw the Olympic Flame arrive in Savannah on the Schooner America. After torch bearers ran through Savannah  they wound their way around Georgia to the Olympic Stadium in Atlanta. The world then watched as the final torch bearer Muhammad Ali lit the Olympic Cauldron.

Two of our friends participated in the relay through Savannah. It was such a thrill to see the Olympic Torch relay in person.

For the Olympic Yachting events, a Day Marina was constructed in the waters of Wassaw Sound near Savannah.  To get there, we had to drive a few miles, ride on a bus, and ride a shuttle boat to the Day Marina along with other volunteers and athletes. For two weeks, Henry, our daughter, and I got up at the crack of dawn and put on our volunteer uniforms to help with the launch and recovery team of volunteers on the Day Marina.

Tents were set up on the Day Marina to provide a home for the athletes during the long days on the water. The larger countries had their own tent and ramp to launch their boats while smaller countries shared a tent. I was assigned to work with Fiji, Guam, Jamaica, and Thailand who were sharing a tent between Team USA and Team New Zealand.

Our days were long and hot but it was worth it to be able to meet athletes and trainers from all over the world. I was even able to do a little pin trading and get a few autographs.

There was a flurry of activity as each team prepared to launch their boats to go out to the race course. Things got busy again when the sailors returned after their event.

The races were too far away to watch from the Day Marina. One day we got to ride a boat out to the race course to see one of the events.

Being an Olympic volunteer was a once in a lifetime experience. Meeting these amazing Olympians and watching them prepare for their events was something I will never forget. I’m so grateful I had the opportunity to do it.

Tailgating on a Golf Course

We stayed in Little Rock to attend the football game  between the Georgia Bulldogs and the Arkansas Razorbacks at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock, Arkansas. On the recommendation of some nice Arkansas fans we met at the campground, we decided to try parking at the golf course to tailgate before the game.

War Memorial Golf Course is an 18 hole, par 65 course located right next to the stadium. When Arkansas plays football in the stadium, it becomes a huge parking area.

Kickoff was at 3:00 pm so we arrived about 10:00 to get in the line of cars entering the golf course. We were directed to the far side of the course next to the fifth hole. Cars and tents covered most of the course. The smell of hamburgers and hot dogs cooking on grills filled the air. By the time kickoff arrived there was hardly any empty space.

Arkansas fans greatly outnumbered the Georgia fans outside and inside the stadium. It was a great game and Georgia won 45-32.

Are you ready for some football?

Our next destination in Missouri was Columbia for the SEC East showdown between the Georgia Bulldogs and Missouri Tigers. Rain poured down on us most of the day Thursday as we drove on back roads through the middle of the state. I was happy to see some early fall colors as we drove along.

As we pulled into Cottonwoods RV Park just north of I-70 we saw a few Georgia fans scattered among the Missouri fans. Many sites were decorated with the red and black of Georgia or the black and gold of Missouri.

The rain continued on Friday but didn’t stop us from exploring Columbia and meeting friends for dinner at the Stadium Grill next to their hotel.

With the rain letting up on Saturday it was a beautiful day for college football. We left early to be sure to find a parking place before the 11:00 am kickoff. The Stadium Grill had plenty of space and it was a perfect place to meet our friends and walk to the stadium. Black and gold tents were set up all around the stadium for tailgating before the game. There were quite a few Georgia fans dressed in red and black.

The Missouri fans were friendly and thanked us for coming. Some even went out of their way to tell us how much they appreciated us being there and to please come back. People were  amazed that we drove all the way from Georgia.

With apologizes to Missouri fans everywhere, it was a great day to be a Georgia Bulldog! The Dawgs won 34-0.
