Cellpic Sunday – From Orange Blossoms to Oranges

One of my granddaughters helped me plant a Cara Cara Orange tree in April, 2021. The tree has survived snow, an ice storm, and tropical storms. Up until this year the tree has only produced a few edible oranges.

I was excited to see Orange Blossoms on the tree in April, 2026.

In October, 2026, the oranges on my Cara Cara orange tree are starting to change color from green to orange.

There are several oranges on the tree but it will be a while before they are ready to pick. I can’t wait!

  1. It’s a great feeling, isn’t it, Beth? I had a small lemon tree on our patio and I was so excited when it produced flowers and then a couple of lemons. Sadly it didn’t make it past that first season but it was so joyful to witness xx

    1. Jo, Yes, I get excited when I can pick fruit from one of my citrus trees. I also have a Meyer Lemon tree that has produced lemons three years in a row. The lemon and the orange trees both do well where I live in coastal Georgia.

  2. Beautiful pictures and an especially lovely tale to go with them. What are “Cara Cara” oranges? Are oranges always this late to ripen or is that peculiar to this species, please? This is a whole different world from my own! 🙂 It must be great to be able to grow oranges in your own garden! Great post, Beth! xx

    1. Thank you Pam! Cara Cara oranges are a variety that grow well in coastal Georgia where I live. This is the first year I hope to have oranges I can eat. Last year there was a freeze before they were ripe and I wasn’t able to save any. They are supposed to be sweet and juicy. Yes, it’s exciting to be able to grow them here.

    1. Mary, yes they are edible. Last year there were about 3 oranges on the tree but we had a freeze before they were ready to eat. They are supposed to be sweet and juicy. There are quite a few on the tree now and I’m keeping my fingers crossed I can taste some this year.
