Every Day is a Gift!
I’ve been digging in the dirt a lot lately trying to get my butterfly garden in shape after flooding from Hurricane Irma killed most of the plants last fall.
A few of the new plants are starting to bloom. The zinnias I planted from seed this winter are bursting with color.
The new milkweed plants attracted their first Monarch of the season this week.
The hummingbirds and Painted Buntings have been stopping by the feeders.
This lizard was trying to drink the hummingbird nectar.

After a great time at the Savannah Scottish Games we stopped at the Savannah Botanical Gardens to see the roses. Owned and operated by the Savannah Area Council of Garden Clubs, Inc., it’s always a treat to walk through the gardens. My favorite time to visit is when the roses are blooming.
It was Cinco de Mayo, and the Cinco de Mayo rose was displaying it’s gorgeous blooms.
The Neil Diamond rose is my favorite.
Roses of every color were blooming all throughout the gardens.
Celebrating Scottish culture and history, the 42nd Annual Savannah Scottish Games and Celtic Festival took place this year on a warm and sunny May 5.
The festival was held on the beautiful grounds of historic Bethesda Academy. Ancient live oak trees dripping with Spanish Moss surrounded the event field. The salt marsh was a perfect backdrop for Highland Dancers. Scottish clans, societies and organizations had their tents set up under the trees. And of course there were food trucks and vendors.
With so many events going on at the same time, we had plenty to keep us entertained. Pipes and Drums music, Border Collie demonstrations, Highland Dancing competition, and Celtic music performances were all taking place at the same time as the Heavy Athletics. In addition, there were tents with information about genealogy and many different Clans.
The Heavy Athletics competition included several fun events to watch. The Caber Toss is a fan favorite. In this event the athlete lifts a twenty foot caber weighing over one hundred pounds, runs a few steps holding it upright, and then tosses it. The object is to have the caber flip once and land straight in front of the athlete at the 12 o’clock position. We also enjoyed watching the Clachneart (Stone Put) and the Sheaf Toss. We didn’t get to see the Throwing of the Weights or the Hammer Throw.
The Pipes and Drums were beautiful to hear.
I have Scottish ancestors on both sides of my family. I enjoyed stopping at a couple of tents to see if I could learn anything about my families. I found out a little about my father’s side of the family but didn’t discover anything new about my Scottish roots on my mothers side. And I still don’t know what our Tartan is. A little more research is in my future.
After the games we stopped to check out the roses at the Savannah Botanical Gardens. Stay tuned for more coming up about that in my next post.
Whether it’s towing our fifth wheel to get to our next campground or taking a scenic drive after setting up camp, we spend a lot of time in our truck when we are wandering around the U.S. and Canada. While Henry drives, my time is often spent looking through the windshield of our truck at the lines in the middle of the road .
March, 2018 marked the fifth anniversary of the WanderingDawgs blog. I started the blog in 2013 as a way to keep friends and family up to date on our journey from Georgia to Alaska and back. I never dreamed that five years later I would still be blogging.

Number 1: For three years in a row, the most viewed post is Starting the Lonesome Dove Cattle Trail. So far, it is the also the number one post for 2018.
Why is this the most popular post? I can only guess that there are as many other Lonesome Dove fans out there that are frustrated because there isn’t more information available about the actual trail that the fictional Hat Creek Cattle Company followed when they took their cattle herd from the Rio Grande in south Texas to Montana.
Number 2: The second most viewed post of 2017 is Wandering Around America One State at a Time – New Mexico.
Number 3: Palo Duro Canyon – the Grand Canyon of Texas.
Number 4: Wandering Around America one State at a Time – Tennessee.
Number 5: Wandering Around America one State at a Time – Utah.
