College football season is finally here! For the next three months, the Wandering Dawgs will be making the drive to Athens, Georgia to watch our University of Georgia Bulldogs play on Saturdays in Sanford Stadium.
Along with thousands of other UGA football fans and students, our favorite route to Athens is along Georgia Highway 15. One of the familiar sights of the trip is an old barn beside the highway in Tennile.
About eighteen years ago a message about Georgia Football had been painted on the sign for the first time. Ever since then, the message changes a few times during the year. Now whenever we travel that way we look forward to seeing what new message will be there.

Welcome to the next post in my series highlighting states we have visited throughout the years. I hope you will enjoy coming along for the ride!
I will be featuring the states alphabetically. The next state in my series is
Oklahoma
Oklahoma became the 46th state on November 16, 1907. The capital is Oklahoma City.
On one of our cross country RV trips we wanted to experience something different in Oklahoma. Red Rock Canyon State Park was just the spot. The entrance to the park was a short distance from I-40 but getting to the campsite required going down a fairly steep grade with a couple of switch backs down into the canyon. Our site was peaceful and a great place to unwind for a couple of nights. We hiked on the Rough Horsetail Nature Trail in the park and explored a few shops on nearby historic Route 66.

I loved the dog walk area at this Oklahoma rest area.
Blondie is definitely a country dog!
We love following the University of Georgia Bulldogs football team to away games. In 2009 we traveled to Stillwater, Oklahoma for a game between the Bulldogs and the Oklahoma State Cowboys. The game was on the day of the dedication for newly renovated Boone Pickens Stadium.

After enjoying a relaxing summer at home, we are once again on a fall road trip to watch the Georgia Bulldogs play an away football game. This year we are on our way to Oxford, Mississippi to see the Dawgs play the Ole Miss Rebels. But in true Wandering Dawgs fashion, we are not taking a direct route to get there.
We started the trip in Oak Mountain State Park in Pelham, Alabama, a few miles south of Birmingham. This is Alabama’s largest state park and it has something for everyone – mountain bike trails, golf course, lake with a beach, hiking trails, a scenic drive, a beautiful campground and more.

Every day Blondie and I walked on the trails around our campground loop.

One day we drove to the dead end of Peavine Falls Road on Double Oak Mountain. As we wound our way up the narrow road I was reminded of some of the drives we have made in the Great Smoky Mountains.
This sign was at the parking lot at the dead end at the top of the road

We enjoyed our stay and were even able to do a little shopping in nearby Pelham and Birmingham before continuing our journey west to our next destination.
